The most basic circuit, with only two wires at the switch Two way switching, 2 wires This arrangement would typically be used in conduit, and uses two wires between each switch. It can also be used in domestic properties by using twin+earth cable between the switches, and 1core+earth from the switches to the ceiling rose. Unfortunately, this is usually encounted in stairwells, with the line from the downstairs lighting circuit and the neutral connected to the upstairs lighting circuit. Such an arrangement is not permitted, as isolating only one of the circuits leaves live wiring depending on the position of the light switches. Two way switching, 3 wires More common in domestic properties. Twin+earth from the ceiling rose to the first switch, and three wires between the switches, usually 3 core and earth cable. This is also known as the 'conversion' method, since it is the easiest way to add a second light switch to an existing circuit. Three way switching, 3 wires Three wires between the two end switches, probably using 3 core and earth cable. Usually the third wire passes the middle intermediate switch but is joined in a separate terminal block. Three way switching, 2 wires Two wires between each switch. Most likely to be found with wires in conduit. The middle switch is an intermediate type. Four or more switches Both of the three way switching diagrams can be extended to four, five or even more switches. All of the additional switches are internediate types (4 terminals), and connect into the middle of the circuit in exactly the same way. A dimmer switch can be used on any of these circuits, but for two switches and above, only one of them can be a dimmer. The single dimmer sets the light level, and the other normal switches just switch the light off and on at whatever level the dimmer is set to. Alternative switch markings Different manufacturers may use alternative markings on the switch. The diagram here shows some of these. There are many other possible combinations, however for one way switching it does not usually matter which way round the wires are connected. If using a two way switch for one way switching, and the switch appears to operate upside down, then move the wire from L1 into L2. For two way switches, swapping L1 and L2 will change the position of the switch when on. Normally, two way switches should be wired so that the light is off when both switches are off. Electrical safety at work Electricity kills and injures people. Around 1000 electrical accidents at work are reported to HSE each year and about 25 people die of their injuries. Many deaths and injuries arise from: use of poorly maintained electrical equipment; work near overhead power lines; contact with underground power cables during excavation work; mains electricity supplies (230 volt); use of unsuitable electrical equipment in explosive areas such as car paint spraying booths; Fires started by poor electrical installations and faulty electrical appliances cause many additional deaths and injuries. The Single Way lighting Circuit is the simplest of the lighting circuits and consists of a source, a switch and a bulb. A single pole switch is the simplest form of electrical wiring. When the switch is in the ON position, it completes the circuit and supplies power to the lighting fixture, when the switch is changed over into the OFF position then the power is removed from the lighting fixture. How to replace a single pole switch 1. Turn off the power to the circuit at the MCB or Fuse 2. Double check that the power is off 3. Remove the switch cover (this has the switch built into it) 4. If it is a single pole it will have 2 wires and the earth connected to it 5. Remove the wires form the existing switch and connect them to the new switch 6. Replace switch and cover on to the back box. 7. Turn the power back on. 8. Test that it works Two way Light switching. This is slightly more difficult and there are several ways of correctly wiring this circuit. This is designed to switch lights from two different places an example of which would be coming into a room from 2 different points in a house and needing to be able to switch the lights on and off. Ring Main and spurs Ring mains as they are called are a series of cables linked together, starting and terminating at the same point in a distribution board. The cable size is important it has to be either 2.5sq mm or 4.0sq mm twin core and earth, these are rated (in free air) at 24amps or 32amps respectively. Ring mains may have spurs off them either they can be spured from an existing socket or from a junction box, there is importantly, over the whole ring, the total number of spurs must not exceed the number of socket outlets directly on the main ring. No more than two separate spurs may be connected from each outlet on the ring.
